The Varada Mudra
The hand lowered withthe palm facing outward is the symbolic gesture (mudra) of loving-kindness & compassion. the story goes that one morning the Buddha passed Sunita, a desperately poor man. the Buddha's radiance was such that Sunita's eyes welled up with tears. The Buddha apoke to Sunita & raised his left hand in a gesture of loving-kindness that became known as the Varada Mudra.
