Hair loss during chemotherapy can be the most distressing side effect. It is one of the only visible side effects and is often the one most feared. Also known as alopecia, hair loss is one of the more well known side effects of cancer treatment.
Hair loss can be different for each person and does not always occur. Hair loss depends on the drug used, the dosage and length of treatment cycle. Hair loss can occur at any time during treatment. It may happen slowly or suddenly over a short period of time. You might not lose all your hair and hair loss can include eye lashes, eyebrows, and body hair.
There is no known prevention for hair loss but preparing yourself for it can help ease the feeling it can cause. Some patients cut their hair before treatment to make the change less dramatic. Buying wigs or head coverings before you need them lets you become familiar and comfortable with them before you wear them in public.
